I'm not sure if this is becoming more of a pattern or I'm just starting to become more aware. I put the conundrum to Lew Rockwell and he thinks it's both. And as Will Grigg notes, take one self-enraptured jerk, and add a badge, and you have a recipe for instant fascist.
